01 胡志明:再会杜拉斯的《情东说念主》It was my first time in Vietnam, and the feeling was both exhilarating and slightly nervous. After landing in Ho Chi Minh, also known as Saigon, the pulse of the city immediately infected me. The scent of warm food, the sounds of motorbikes zooming by, and the sights of the city's famous French colonial architecture all assaulted my senses. The streets were buzzing with activity as I checked into my hotel - a quaint little place tucked away in a quiet street in District 1. The next day, armed with a map and my camera, I set out to explore the city that has so much history.
Ho Chi Minh City is a city that screams character and history at every turn. The French Colonial buildings that line the streets are a testament to an era gone by, when this city was known as Saigon - the Pearl of the Orient. I walked past the Notre-Dame Cathedral with its soaring spires and made my way to the famous Saigon Opera House, also known as the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City. This Beaux-Arts monument is an architectural gem that stages performances
I took a stroll through the leafy streets of District 1, where the famous Hotel Continental Vietnam once stood, and had a glimpse of the old Indochina villa style of architecture. The feeling was reminiscent of the setting in Marguerite Duras's novel "L'Amant (The Lover)," and I couldn't help but imagine the torrid affair between a French girl and a Chinese man that unfolded in this very place.
Indulging myself in the ocean of French flavor, I couldn't help but compare Ho Chi Minh with Yangon, another famous city in Southeast Asia with a rich colonial legacy. Both Ho Chi Minh City and Yangon exude a captivating charm rooted in their colonial pasts, yet each city possesses its own unique character and allure. While Saigon's streets are bustling with a fusion of Vietnamese vitality and French sophistication, Yangon's avenues are adorned with elegant British colonial architecture, reflecting a different colonial influence.
Walking through Yangon's colonial district, I was struck by the grandeur of buildings such as the Secretariat and the Yangon City Hall, reminiscent of a bygone era of British rule. The contrast between the orderly grid-like layout of Yangon's streets and the chaotic charm of Saigon's alleys sparked contemplation on the impact of colonial legacies on urban planning and development in Southeast Asia.
Despite these differences, both cities share a common thread of resilience and cultural richness, shaped by their turbulent histories and diverse populations. While Ho Chi Minh City pulsates with the energy of modern Vietnam, Yangon exudes a more laid-back vibe, offering a glimpse into Myanmar's storied past and promising future.
In comparing these two iconic cities, I couldn't help but marvel at the ways in which colonial legacies have shaped their identities, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence their landscapes, cultures, and people to this day.
02 大叻:遗失在东方的法国小镇The next day, I was off to Da Lat, a city that has the distinction of being known as the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its temperate climate. The air was fresh and fragrant with the scent of pine trees as I made my way to the city center. Da Lat is also known for its beautiful parks and flower gardens, which were a sight to behold.
As I wandered through the winding streets of Da Lat, I was enchanted by the city's charming French colonial architecture, which lent it an air of timeless elegance. Quaint cafes adorned with colorful flowers spilled onto the sidewalks, inviting passersby to indulge in leisurely moments of relaxation.
One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the iconic Xuan Huong Lake, its tranquil waters reflecting the lush greenery that surrounded it. Strolling along the lakeside promenade, I watched as locals and tourists alike reveled in the serenity of the setting, basking in the mild climate that Da Lat is renowned for.
Intrigued by the city's cultural heritage, I ventured to the Dalat Railway Station, a striking example of Art Deco architecture that harkened back to a bygone era of travel. Stepping onto the vintage steam train, I embarked on a nostalgic journey through the picturesque countryside, passing by verdant tea plantations and mist-covered hillsides.
As the sun began to set over the horizon, casting a warm glow upon the city, I realized that Da Lat truly lived up to its moniker as the "City of Eternal Spring," offering a haven of tranquility and natural beauty amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life. With its temperate climate, breathtaking scenery, and rich cultural heritage, Da Lat had captured my heart, leaving me eager to explore more of its hidden treasures.
03 芽庄:寰宇上最好意思的海滩After spending a couple of days in Da Lat, I made my way to Nha Trang, a coastal city that boasts of beautiful beaches and clear blue waters. My journey took me on a bus ride through the lush green countryside, where I saw farmers working their fields and children playing in the streets. It was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the cities.
Arriving in Nha Trang, I was greeted by a vibrant atmosphere buzzing with energy. The city's coastal charm was evident from the moment I stepped onto its sandy shores. I settled into a cozy beachfront bungalow, where the sound of waves crashing against the shore lulled me into a state of tranquility.
Eager to explore, I embarked on a snorkeling adventure, marveling at the kaleidoscope of colors beneath the crystal-clear waters. Vibrant coral reefs teeming with exotic fish danced before my eyes, offering a glimpse into the mesmerizing underwater world.
In between dips in the ocean, I roamed the bustling streets of Nha Trang, sampling the local cuisine from street food stalls and quaint seaside cafes. From succulent grilled prawns to savory seafood pho, each dish was a culinary delight that tantalized my taste buds.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of pink and orange, I found myself grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Nha Trang. With its idyllic beaches, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality, it was a destination that left an indelible mark on my heart, beckoning me to return again someday.
My journey in Vietnam was over, but the memories would stay with me forever. From the pulse-racing streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the serene beaches of Nha Trang, Vietnam had been a revelation. It was a country that was both familiar and foreign, where the past was always present and hope for the future seemed bright. The trip was about exploring a country that has always held a fascination for me, about understanding its people and its culture better, even though this country has too much love-hate relationship with China.
